How to Opt In for STP in Xero

Written by Marilyn

Reporting your payroll data to the ATO is simple and secure thanks to Single Touch Payroll (STP) built right into Xero. By opting in, your wages, allowances, tax, and super information are automatically sent to the ATO each time you finalise a pay run, keeping your business completely compliant without any extra work. Setting it up only takes a few minutes, here's a step by step guide to help you set it up.

Step By Step Guide:

  1. Navigate to Single Touch Payroll
Click on the Payroll menu at the top of your screen and select Single Touch Payroll

  2. Begin the Opt-In Process
Once the Single Touch Payroll page loads, click the blue Opt in button to get started.

  3. Review Organisation Details
Review your Organisation details (such as your legal/trading name, ABN, and address). If everything looks correct, click Continue.

Note: If anything is incorrect, you'll need to update it in your Organisation Settings first.

  4. Set Filing Reminders
On the next screen, ensure that the "Remind me before I file" checkbox is ticked so you never miss a deadline. Click Continue.

  5. Choose Your Organisation for Filing
For the File STP section, select your organisation from the options provided to designate who is filing the reports.

  6. Connect and Register with the ATO
To finalise the setup, follow the two on-screen steps to connect Xero to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO):

    1. Call the ATO (or log into your ATO Access Manager) and provide them with your Software Provider Notification details (like your Software ID provided on screen).

    1. Once the ATO has linked your Xero account, go back to Xero, tick the Confirm connection checkbox, and click Register.

That's it!✨Your Xero account is now fully set up and connected for STP reporting.😍
